Cropping or resizing the picture forces your camera/device to re-encode it in the right orientation for real, so it fixes it.
Resizing is preferable, since cameras usually have crazy high resolution but their optics can't take pictures in such good quality that justifies the super file size. Zooming on them only shows grain instead of fantastic detail, so you can make the picture smaller and you won't lose any meaningful detail.
