GI Joes had double jointed knees and various other lines too. Only a few hold outs back then, which, no surprise, are mostly the same hold outs today. It's just cheap companies being cheap.
Obviously, that money McFarlane didn't spend for the double joints went to the amazing paint work the figures had... which isn't to say Mcfarlane wasnt spending money on articulation either, because they had as much or more articulation than Hasbro's MLs, despite missing double joints.
So back then, McFarlane wanted to keep the sculpt intact, which he's still trying to today. But today he's trying new schemes, like the silicon torso overlay. He's still trying to hold true to his guns while making modern buyers happy.
it's a huge shame that the modern toys don't look this good. I don't know if beacuse the art style changed or what, but look at this fucker. The gulf is vast between the lines in terms of detail.
And he has way better articulation and range of motion than his modern counterpart.
