Every time a Spawn figure came with shit-looking chains, I cut them off and replaced them with real chain. It's stupid easy, stupid cheap, no reason not to do it unless you're the type who would rather just whine endlessly instead of fixing a problem.
Having extra chain on hand is also never a bad thing when it comes to a Spawn collection. You can drape it over props, wrap it around foes and create tension for action poses, it's just one of the best purchases I've made toy-wise.
