It's all about avoiding paying royalties or to create something new so you yourself can get those royalties.
And while D&D is about having your own avatars, there's a ton and ton of established characters. In most cases, it inspires people to create their own Dalamar the Darks and Stormblades. And that's a key thing, because you want to make these stories full of characters to show how exciting the setting can be.
What works for toys works for RPGs too, because toys are all about role playing too.
No doubt, you only got into Mythic Legions because of other fantasy shit you like. If you actually got stuff from your favorite fantasy series, would you even give Mythic Legion a chance? I sure wouldn't. Mythic Legion basically exists to fill in the blanks for things you're missing.
Think of it like this, do you even own any generic superhero toys? Why buy generic when so many companies offer up the real deal? And generic superhero shit does exist, but /toy/ rarely ever mentions them except to shit on them. Same isn't true for fantasy, because there's so many missing blanks. Same with sci fi shit.
Give people want they want, instead of generic shit that makes so little money that companies like 4H don't even bother to open their store to sell their toys despite having thousands of overstock sitting around, except twice a year.
