Got my Germans all shaded up - please ignore the gunner's left arm, the say he's sculpted is supposed to have his hands on the aiming wheel handles and it'll be easier to fit him into position if I reinstall the arm after fitting him into the seat so his hands are positioned properly.
I'm experimenting with something a friend suggested with some Warhammer Nuln Oil shade. The results are great but the gloss definitely is stronger than I thought even after I hit them with some dullcote. It's been my default for years but at this point the strength at killing any kind of shine has been decreasing to the point I would love to get something far stronger for a flat matte coat sealer.
As for the Wirbelwind itself, not a whole lot is left before assembly - I shouldn't have glued the fine details down before this step since it's the reason I don't want to airbush (masking is impossible now) but oh well, live and learn. I'll have to use thinned tamiya paint to try and get as close to the soft edge look of the camo as possible with handpainting, but thankfully since by 1944 the Germans were kind of just using anything to apply paint - including outright brooms apparently - that a slightly harder edge is justifiable. I'll have to get some gap filler putty tomorrow when I can visit the hobby shop and then I can get the turret fully assembled.
