Imagine how the military of right now would react to them and they wouldn't even be able to fathom how they work because of how technologically advanced they were. We'd just try to bomb them and then get wiped out in a day.
There weren't many civilizations more advanced than the Federation and were pretty much the first to actually counter them. Even within the ST universe, other large civilizations would probably not be able to do anything to them. Even monolithic ones like the Dominion wouldn't be able to handle them, due to lack of creative sciencing.
Through straight force, no one could have beat them, hence the Federation losing round after round against them against a single borg ship, even after Data's/Picard's sleep trick.
Voyager definitely nerfed them when they could actually take them head on and win against multiple cubes and spheres.
I'm not a fan of the Borg ship designs, except for those off-track ones that were taken in a pinch and then borgefied. Blocks and cubes are boring.
