Look at the two sets below, one old, one new. They're roughly equivalent - a couple city streets with a car wash, shop and some other crap - but they don't look remotely similar. You could never use pieces from one in the other without it sticking out like a sore thumb. Even if the blocks still technically fit into each other, new Lego is just not compatible with old Lego. It's too different.
