It's like you said, it's actually more James Bond-esque and most kids actually viewed it more similar to Knight Rider.

I'm sure you have no idea who Knight Rider is, but it was super popular with kids, despite KITT not even being 1/10th as cool as the transforming, heavily armed MASK cars.

Not everything had to be transforming giant robots back in the day and kids had a variety of interests. In fact, Transformers wasn't as popular as you think it was back then, so comparing it to Transformers kinda falls flat. He-Man and GI Joe were bigger franchises.
