Using a straight foot on a pose like this conveys motion to me, like he's in mid-stride or mid-step. Using a toe joint there would convey something completely different--his entire balance and center of gravity would change. Toe poses typically convey the idea of very low, grounded poses to me. They're not right for every situation. In a pose like this, I would keep the foot straight even if the figure had toe joints.
Also, I am well aware this isn't a good pose in the first place, but it was the first one I could find when Googling around and it at least illustrates what I'm talking about.
