I personally like to make my mechs as stud-less as possible. I think if you added some slopes and tile pieces onto the mech, it'd look a lot fuller.

It has nothing to do with a lack of creativity. I've made mech cockpits from scratch, as well ad mech cockpits from literal 4+ sets. It's all about what works for the design. Sometimes doing an overdesigned brick built cockpits is a detriment to a mech design whereas the pre-built stuff gives it a smoother look. Like I said, I use both, but it just depends on what I'm going for with the mech.
