Here's my basic progress on the ship so far. Photo etch is a White Ensign Models set, which is overall... crap honestly compared to other photo etch sets I've used. The parts aren't numbered, and the instructions are hard to read. There are also only a few pieces with built in folds, and the photo etch itself is very fragile. That said, I've made the best of it so far, though the plane catapults are pretty messed up, as I had to dunk them in acetone a few times to get everything aligned properly. They are by far the worst part so far, because the instructions make you build each catapult from four individual pieces, instead of just having one piece that you fold together to make the thing. Another thing is the .50 cal deck guns, which are damn microscopic in 1/700 and very difficult to fold, and I need over a dozen of them.
I've had to do some minor scratchbuilding here and there too, as I fucked up the funnels and had to make my own replacement parts, and lost a few of the periscopes for one of the turrets.
I also re-did the styrofoam base a few hours ago, but once again I kinda fucked up the rear and there is a huge gap that you can see in the picture.
I need to find something to fill in this gap if anyone has any ideas / recommendations? I think what I'm going to do is just wait till I'm done painting, and apply a thick layer of heavy acrylic gel and then smooth it out with my fingers or something, and then paint it the ocean color to blend it with the rest.
