I'll tell you exactly why.
It's because "nerd culture" is "cool" and if someone is into nerd stuff, it's considered "cool" and "quirky" and "fun".
But if you openly CARE about nerd stuff, if you're emotionally invested (beyond what male characters should be fucking each other), then you're GROSS XD and ICKY XD and a NECKBEARD XD
Because they're abstractions, there's a layer of "safety" in Pops. You can like the IDEA and the CONCEPT of Dr. Who, but if you have something that actually tries to replicate the character or the actor, then it's a little TOO into this stuff for normies and girls who describe themselves as "geeks" on Tinder.
It's the same with Legos and why they're so popular. The abstraction is a buffer between the concept and the thing. It's SUPPOSED to look simplistic and stylized, so you can read your own stuff into it, it's not supposed to look like the actual thing. No one will question if you have a Lego figure of Batman, but if you have the NECA Michael Keaton Batman, then oh boy, you know how those NERDS are. You have a WWE Pop, oh boy, that's so fun! You have a WWE Elite figure, ewwww gross manchild!
