>>9362348I'm extremely lazy. I just prime everything black, drybrush white or silver over the relevant areas and use inks to give them colour. The drybrush means the recesses are naturally darker and the application won't be too thick but will look somewhat coarse, which is perfect for a weathered and gritty look.
Inks are translucent and even when over applied, can be cleaned up with a tissue paper and only have a tendency to pool in the crevices and recesses rather than globbing on like paint. They also flow much more easily than paint so it's easier to tint small areas than be precise compared to painting.
Here's a stone structure I did for Warhammer. Prime back, drybrush white for a zenithal effect, sponge on white for texture and glaze over with variations of brown and green ink to get a nice gradation in colour.
