Think linen mummy wrappings that are still around, vs plastic lawn chairs that get brittle and crack after a few years. Even in optimum conditions, plastics get brittle and yellow as the plasticizers in them off-gas. They aren't made to last for decades, but for a few years instead. This is my teddy bear, which I got in the early 1960s. He's worn, but still has his original stuffing, original glass eyes and face embroidery. The mohair is totally worn off, but the velvet nose and paw pads still look good.
