This guy, Boglins, Madballs, along with movies like Gremlins and Ghostbusters made this small subculture of 'radical monsters'. The first attempt to bring back MPM in 2001 tried to tone down how fierce the original looked and ended up looking kind of coked out. A second attempt that brought the original design back but made him soft all around. Also both were downsized while the original was about as big as the kids who bought them
As of lately though My Pet Monster got a Funk Pop, two figures in the Reaction line, and a Creepy Company figure, so maybe a full scale revival is imminent
