They can be easily expanded on. Lionel does have high quality products such as the two steam trains in vidrel. All manufacturers use the same couplers though and many of the freight cars and the electric engine are not Lionel. All of these built to scale models do tend get pricey and on the high end of the hobby expect to start paying thousands for complete sets.
