Painted will always look better, despite what super close ups would make you believe, since any flaw will be hardly noticeable unless the specks are a different color from the rest of the paint.
Hand painted prototypes are usually praised, despite the fact taht they'll probably be even more flawed than OP's, since they're touched and moved around a hundred different times before they're even displayed somewhere.
It's definitely not about bare colored plastic figure looking like a toy, it's that it looks CHEAP toy.
