If they really wanted for this movie to be the film Andy saw as a kid then they should have had free license to basically emulate almost anything from the 90's and movies that were out in that decade.
I'd have liked to see a post-credits scene of Buzz "crash landing on an uncharted planet" and in his daze of coming across his ship and getting his bearings he is greeted by a certain cowboy. Basically implying the events of the movie are a "prequel" to Toy Story but only in the mind of Buzz.
