If you like toys and like everything under the sun, you have but no choice to bow down to how much better 1:18 is to everything else.
Also, 1:12 isn't the compromise scale. It's actually 1:18, since 1:12 has next to nothing.
1:24 and smaller scales are for vehicles and even tinier scales are for buildings/cities. Humans usually just suck, especially if you want them articulated.
1:6 is for humans, where you can find all sorts of humans that you can't even find in 1:12 like firemen, police, scientists, etc.
1:18 falls between them to still include everything while doing a great job with everything.
