Most of that gapage in the lower-center of the fighter mode should be eliminated by pegging the legs all the way into the fuselage. If doing so makes you unable to peg in the backpack, try fiddling around with the joint at the knees. You may have the legs bent slightly too far upwards (relative to fighter mode). Bending the lower legs slightly downwards should help you get things lined up. Having the legs pegged all the way into the fuselage will also help straighten the backpack once its pegged in, though the backpack will still generally angle downwards a bit.
