After parting ways SAAB produced the JAS39, but Aermacchi due to political restriction couldn't go the same way and develop a multirole like the swedes and preferred going the route of the subsonic AMX. The technical know-how was there, but the political will to finance such a project was not and Aermacchi (even pre Alenia merger) could never finance such a project.
