Officially (it's in the MG manual), the giant things on its back are binders. And on the level of "a binder is a thing that boosts mobility", that makes sense. That's exactly what they do for the GP-03. But on a more literal level, that makes zero sense because the GP-03's binders have no closing capability whatsoever. They're more like the GP-01 fb's universal boosters than anything.
So things went from "it can sorta close I guess" on the Hyaku Shiki to "I guess you could call it closing when you fold the thing into the backpack" on the Zeta to "fuck it, just call it a binder" on the GP-03.
