The reason Macross figures are so sleek in jetmode is because they're entirely designed to look like they're made of parts of the jet. Meanwhile, look at starscream, the only parts of his robot mode from the front that come from the real jet mode are the legs, cockpit area of the chest, and wings. The arms, chest vents, and pelvis, are all unique to the robot, and have to be stuffed in it somehow
