Railroad culture between the Europeans and the Americans is VERY different when it came to steam. With Europeans, they name every single one of their locomotives in addition to the numbers with the railroads having great pride in their appearance and so would paint up a lot of their engines.
American culture past the 1800s and the original 4-4-0s like The General? The times you would see painted locomotives that were NOT exclusively passenger locomotives were rare indeed - off the top of my head most of them are also green. Attached is an image of my friend's sizable collection of steam locomotives (which is maybe a third of his total collection and he's always adding more ) and these have heavy hitters. Big Boys, Y6Bs, Yellowstones, even a Triplex - and they're all pretty much along the same lines.
