>>11242442I've been planning on using this old TMNT Sewer Lair playset as the dungeon / sewers beneath Castle Grayskull, so I like your idea very much. Unfortunately, I think Mattel is massively scaling back on playsets for action figures. They haven't even announced the Turtles of Grayskull Slime Pit / Ooze Pit that's been teased in artwork for almost 2 years now. When that didn't show up at the last SDCC, I knew that meant it was never gonna get released.
Beyond that, look at their recent track record with playsets: The Origins Snake Mountain was made in much smaller quantities than Castle Grayskull, to the point where it's going for double the MSRP while Grayskull can still be found for ~$80. The Netflix playsets, while awesome, did not sell at all. That sick as hell throne for Masters of the WWE Universe was canceled. And don't forget their most recent debacle where they took the Snake Lair, a slam-dunk product voted on by customers, and needlessly embellished it into a bloated, ugly, Imaginext-looking monstrosity.
As much as it pains me to say, adult action figure collectors do not enjoy playsets enough for companies to keep making them, with the only exception being direct-to-customer sales. And believe me, I love playsets more than anything, and I argued with people that companies were the ones to blame. I looked at kids playsets, and doll playsets, and pointed out how those continue to sell at retail. But the more I listened to people's opinions the more I realized that most adult men simply do not enjoy making elaborate displays and instead just want to stack their figures together in neat little rows on their shelves, desks, or media centers - which I find rather sad and boring, but that's just the way things are. As long as action figures are primarily adult collectibles (which MOTU products clearly are), companies will cater to that audience, and that audience is largely indifferent to playsets.
