The mantis is pic related definitely looks like what I can remember (again, this IS a memory more that is older than 17 years, so there's room for inaccuracies)-I definitely remember thinking that the placement of the scythes was awkward, breaking it off in the process, and I think I remember the sword.
I guess there is a possibility that whatever I had was a knockoff because I got it at a Korean street market. The intricate wing storage/unfolding translucent wing system, and the fact that I saw a kid wearing clothes that had the robots that I got (beetle, mantis, and every other one) in a group-shot which matched the toys meant that
1) It was probably based off of an anime
2) If not, was prominent enough to have the robots be featured in cartoon form on apparrel
