If it was Autism speaks, then theoretical it’s going towards researching the causes of autism so they can irradiate it. By aborting or possibly even prenatally editing all babies so they don’t have it.
In practice it’s mostly going towards ads telling you how having an autistic child will probably ruin your life and your marriage, as well as funding a bunch of conventions and meets where they still invite anti-vaxers (despite having finally Formally withdrawing support for the movement), as well as people saying diluted bleach will cure autism (not a joke, look it up), and various other forms of misguided child abuse.
They also offer support and therapy for the parents to help them deal with the trauma of having to have an autistic child, as opposed to the kids themselves for who they do very little of the therapies which have actually been shown to help the kids be happier or more functional.
And sometimes they publicly say how they sympathize with parents who commit murder suicide with their autistic children.
There’s a reason they literally don’t have any, nor I believe really allow, actual autistic people on any of their boards or committees.
>TLDR: You want to help actually autistic people, go online and find an organization to donate to which, unlike Autism Speaks, actually provides therapies and services to autistics and isn’t literally universally disavowed by all autists.
