Reaper Miniatures uses super rubbery plastics for their Bones models and they're as sharp as their resin models.
The only sharp ends that are rounded off are found on pointy weapons or horn, and even then, their gummy weapons hold as much detail as most model kits you'll find from Lil Armory.
Modern plastics and their molding techniques are universally great. It's up to the sculptors to make proper use of them and for companies to use create/restore molds when they start losing their sharpness.
As for paint, yeah, there's no question that Hasbro has cheaped out on that. Even then, their sculpts are still amazing and a good paint job only highlights how great they are.
