Disney is feeling a lot of pressure right now. The Solo movie damaged the brand and lost them 100 million and combined with The Last Jedi lost them nearly all of their bargaining power for reserved screens.
The biggest lose has been on the video game front. EA failed Disney worse than Rian or Kathleen Kennedy with battlefront that lost the company a billion in stock value and still has not become profitable.
Their biggest clients, Lego and Hasbro are in full panic mode as they rely on Star Wars as their main cash cows and are now losing shelf space and seeing abysmal numbers because no one is interested in the new merchandise.
Likewise, their animation department is falling apart with the Star Wars Resistance trailer getting 90% dislikes. They had hoped to corner the same market as the semi-success Rebels and Clone Wars series had.
Everything is riding on Episode 9 and Rian set it up to fail before it even came out.
In a way, I think Rian and JJ are based. Had they just consulted with actual fans and George and filtered it through professional directors, focusing on making appealing characters, new and aesthetically pleasing vehicles / war machines and settings tied together with a story that neither discounted, upstaged or robbed the originals, it'd be unfathomably successful. George actually had the right idea of going forward in time and releasing a trilogy about the beginnings of the Jedi/Sith and Palpatine up until the events of Episode 1.
Unfortunately, the damage is done and it will continue to die unless a miracle occurs.
