The instructions are actually kind of bad because they try to start you off with moving the head in such a way that's impossible until you unhinge the chestpiece and move the arms. It's kind of a mess clearances and nudging everything little by little until it's where it's supposed to be.
Also to one anon who was wondering about giving him swapable chests, you might be able to. The chestpiece is on a hinge but if you just cut it off there's some other tabs holding it in place. I'm not really sure how secure those are but it might work.
