>>8485539>>8485557>>8486121>>8486523Very first edition Kobolds were described as essentialy scaled beings with dog like heads. It's said that Japan apparantly mistranslated things so all they got was dog like creatures, hence why Kobolds in anime and most japanese games look like dog people.
but in the first editions, they were very much a more mammalian race, just one with some reptilian traits like the scales. They were even categorized as one of the 'goblinoid' races alongside Gnolls, Orcs, and Bugbears all having descended from the same common primeval ancestor the Beast Men. Kobolds had not yet been given ANY sort of bloodline connection to dragons.
second edition saw Tony Diterlizzi provide his interpretation of the Kobold after a brief period where the original artist for that edition's monster folio made kobolds look like another form of generic goblin. Tony's bolds varied a bit now and then, sometimes coming off far more ratlike as in
>>8486121 while other times looking like portly scaled dogs.
third edition is when they went full reptile and dragon related and they never looked back.
