It helps that most of the members turned into all manners of torture contraptions. It sort of makes sense in universe that Megs would have come up with boogiemen meant to keep the 'cons in line. The original intent was that they they weren't invincible and regularly replaced members who would pick up the call signs.
Of course that got thrown out the window when their feats involved killing serious heavy hitters with impossible odds and that was explained away by drug abuse. Plus Tarn's 'identity' could have been alluded to in such a clever and subtle way with his addiction and his real powerset and they never touched on it, ever. Going out like bitches would have worked better if it was properly built up.
Also they looked cool and I'm glad they're getting turd party toys.
