There were way less sets back in the 90's releasing compared to today, so it's not like there's a ton of options to gawk at.

There was the juniorization era as well where nothing was good, which also limits options.
A lot of the "zoomer" stuff is actually pretty good. The fantasy era of castle in the late 2000's is one of my favorites, with knights, trolls, dwarfs, reanimated armies, etc.
Sad fact is after that a vast majority of sets either became licensed or dust collectors, and most of city sets are just boring, and don't stand out really.
