Start with a concept for both modes, then compromise into something between. Definitely map out where you want kibble to end up in both modes, and decide which cues you will absolutely not want to change. See if you can get some cheap bionicle parts if you want to experiment with joint ideas.
I'm trying to make one myself but really you just gotta marshmallow test it until you get into the right state of mind.
