You think companies make a product first and then hope stores like Walmarts order them? NOPE. Companies make a concept, show their shit off to retailers and only after MIMIMUM orders are made, do they start production on them.
It's why trade shows like Toy Fair exist, because toy companies want to make toys and need to get buyers interested in products, so that they can produce them and sell them in stores. Sometimes they have to go around the world in various trade shows and that takes 6-12 months before they get enough retailer support.
Since Kickstarter became a thing, Hasbro is just conforming to how Kickstarter does shit to attract normal consumers.
There's a lot of shit that never gets made because retailers didn't make enough orders lot of times and usually never gets shown to the public. Only a fraction of what they prototype that never gets produced is shown to fans.
