The ends are looped for more contact area and more importantly, to avoid contact with the sharp bits.
They aren't coat hangers either, they're soft aluminum craft wire, which is several times cheaper than coat hangers per meter and you need not worry about rusting.
Of course, you can spray plastidip, use pvc tape or buy them in colors matching the background and make them pretty but effort, don't have it.
