Speed Champs wheels and fenders are absolutely gigantic in comparison to a minifig and force you to raise the entire beltline of the car to compensate (you've got one single plate over the fenders!); I've seen lots of people have success just using smaller wheels and either brick-built or no fenders and giving them much more room to work with to shape the vehicle.
They also tend to end up scaled better to the figs themselves if you care about that.
