I would shake the pot, open it and put it down, then dunky brush in water, usually collecting about a drop or two of water, and mix that into the paint that remained in the lip, using that thinned down paint for my minis, adding a bit more paint or water to get it to the right balance.
But I have done plenty well without primer. I've actually had negative results with primer on my vehicles, because any paint on edges would rub off, whereas the ones I did without primer didn't have this issue.
Pic is the tank in question (it's a gladiator tank). Look at the edges of the green parts around the multi melta, and smoke launchers, as well as the blue-grey chassis of the turret base, especially on the bottom front. The primer was corax white.
Maybe i fucked up the process somewhere, but I can only report my experiences.
