I tried making mine on the "premium" masking tape (has better adhesion than the regular one) and when that seemed to be a bit flimsy on it's own, I covered it in duct tape as well. Worked better than I expected. Pic related, that shit took AGES. I think I was cutting them out for hours.
But yeah for sure I wouldn't go over 2-3 cm with decals unless I really didn't have another choice. Anything larger that doesn't have tiny details is much simpler to mask/stencil on. Also leaves a better finish.
