Crisis on Infinite Earths was just a way for DC to simplify continuity. Instead of having the Golden Age, Silver Age, Fawcett comics, Freedom Fighters, etc, all on separate earths and continuities, it combined them all onto one earth with a shared history.
There’s a book series called History of the DC Universe that was published after Crisis to give readers an idea of how the new continuity looked. It’s pretty good, especially if you’re into obscure continuity.
