In fact, a lot of what stays true to the source are also cheesy IPs, even if they're not comedic.
Even "serious" manga get cheesed out in live action, like Death Note, where Japan embraces how cheesy that stuff can be by doing 1:1 designs for live action.
The problem with Hollywood is that they try to make cheesy shit into a serious action movie. See Power Rangers and how gritty they tried to make it, despite how incredibly EZ squeeze processed cheese the Power Ranger series is.
"True" fans of these IPs may want the designs to be faithful, but they're not low budget schlock that caters to otaku like you see in Japan. Hollywood wants to reach for more than the niche, hence getting rid of the cheese to attract a bigger audience.
tl;dr: designs are "serioused" up if it doesn't look good on screen. Cheesy designs stay cheesy if they're going toward the comedic route.
