I don't know if you just have limited experience with BW, but that shit was OUT THERE compared to what had come before. Sure characters like Cheetor seem simplistic now, but that shit was mind blowing back in the day, and it went even further when they started introducing the Transmetals and Fuzors. Not to mention the addition of amazing articulation. Most G1 toys couldn't move for shit, you could swing the arms up and that was about it. G2 made some progress, but look at something like G2 Dreadwing, and then look at Optimus Primal.
And it wasn't like you had basic robots wearing fur shells. The idea was that even the robots had more organic shapes to them, like Guyver.
