Eventually when Ben rejoined the F4 Sharon came along for the ride and even joined the F4 during one of the periods where they were short a member or two.
Anyway, she and Ben are bathed in the same cosmic radiation that created the original F4. Ben mutated into an even rockier stronger spiky Thing and Sharon became She-Thing. Initially, she even had the soft muddy sort of Thing form that Ben had way back in issue 1.
