Around the mid-late nineties, collectors noticed that toys made with thin fake leather (thin PVC bonded to a polyester backing) had started to crack and peel off the backing. At first, it was scattered, and we didn't know if it was individual degradation from poor storage, or the inevitable fate for all affected pieces. It turned out that if some peel, all will eventually peel. An early big example was Shana's dress. Somebody at the old Jem and Friends board said that this was caused by the chemicals breaking down in the PVC, and could be held off by dabbing afflicted pieces with a plastic car seat restoring product that contained formaldehyde. At this point I decided my Shana was just SOL.
