And you don't even have to look that far back to see new characters being introduced that weren't entirely white.
There's a difference between diversity and DIVERSITY!!! for the sake of marketing
I was around on the internet in the mid-90s and had been reading magazines before that about all the new diverse XMen characters coming out like Bishop, Maggot, Skin, Sync, Cecilia, etc etc etc and no one really gave a shit about their race.
When there were complaints, it was about the characters themselves or the story.
Even today you can have black and gay characters with people not giving a shit. It's when it's FORCED (iceman retcon) or just dumb (new green lantern who uses a fucking pistol) that people complain.
Also, most of the hate for Kamilla came from her not having any of the same powers as Captain Marvel and Marvel's stance in trying to push Inhumans as the XMen replacements. She was created around the same time that Marvel and Fox were fighting over the characters that they licensed. In terms of toy history, this is when Hasbro stopped making toys for XMen movies. The second Wolverine film had generic comic Wolverine figures come out instead of having an entire line like the first Wolverine movie did.
