With the serials, he no longer had that leash on and could write pretty much anything he liked. And since Greg was a huge comicbook fan, he turned Bionicle into "Pretty much capeshit with cyborgs".
I wonder how the serials would've gone if he was a manga/anime fan instead. I'm not saying it would've been better, in fact I'm sure it would've been just as awful if not worse. I imagine the resident edgelords would've been even bigger edgelords.
