Those red squares are supposed to be on his thighs; the toy accomplishes this by letting you clip the upper edge of his bucket to his actual thighs, locking the transformation joint in place and allowing you to bend his actual knees beneath it. The stock photography is mistransformed (shocking, I know) - the two red circles here are his actual knees.
