the problem was that all the later settings felt much less interesting and there was just less to them. we didn't get to see different villages or districts on Voya Nui, Mahri Nui or Karda Nui, they didn't really feel like parts of a lived-in world with Matoran going about their business and all that. maybe Mahri Nui was the closest to that because at least it had the "collecting air bubbles" job, but other than that it was just a generic undersea town
I do wish they would have stayed with the tribal theme to some degree, but 2004 was also a great year. it's 2005 that really fucked things up with the bad sets and completely unnecessary premise. if the events of 2005 never happened, nothing would really change for the overall story and "metru nui, but it's all covered in ugly cobwebs" wasn't exactly a compelling setting either
