First thing before you do any of this is spend some time in a layout designing program like XTrackCAD or SCARM trying to plan out what you want in your layout based on how much space you have to work with. I personally settled on the 2'x2' footprint so that it'd be lightweight and easy to carry through doors, and set out to work planning on something to fit within those limits.
I ended up with pic related after a few ideas/concepts racked around my head. It's pretty much a simple loop with a passing siding and a branch leading to an upper level. One thing you want to keep in mind on layout design is curve radius, due to my usage of these compact curves on the layout I can't run anything larger than around 40 scale feet (Though that was always the intention during planning). If you want to run big shit like Big Boys or Challengers be sure to design appropriately.
