I started learning by painting halo figures from mega construx. I like how customizable they are even before you apply any paint and at ~$3 a fig, I don't feel too bad if I mess something up. I'm still too new to it to offer any advice other than "fuck around to get a feel for it". Definitely do a clear coat but I use a brush instead of a spray.
